Columbia Maryland
I moved to Columbia, Maryland about six months ago. I grew up in a military family and have lived in many places around the United States and in Germany. I spent most of my adult life living in southern Arizona. Maryland has been a huge culture shock for my family. Columbia in particular is very different from anything we have ever experienced. Traveling or vacationing in the east coast is much different than actually living here. We are often asked the question "you're not from around here are you". My family stands out from the crowds because the prevailing culture of the greater Baltimore/Washington DC area is to blend in with your surroundings. It has occured to us that with such a heavy concentration of population comes the need to not stand apart and put oneself at risk. Maryland has a strange culture of people living in bubbles and those who have crossed the line into violence. It is rare to hear music playing from cars or to hear people speaking loudly in puplic places. The public park actually has a sign that informs you that loud voices or noises are prohibited. Yes, loud voices. My husband is from Texas where a loud voice is a given and would certainly never be prohibited. Obviously, my family and I don't have a good impression of Columbia, or Maryland at large (and we have taken weekend trips to try to find something likeable). Greatfully, my husband has made it clear to his employer that it is imperative for the health of his family that we relocate back to a sunny (weather and disposition wise) location and they have agreed. I do believe anyone from the west or south should seriously consider the huge culture shock of the east coast before considering a relocation. I think my youngest daughter summed it up nicely wheyn she said "Imagine if all the happy kids from Arizona came to play in this park-they wouldn't know what do with them." |
